Director’s Message

Welcome to the Advanced Materials and Process Engineering Laboratory (AMPEL) website.

AMPEL is home to 30 research groups with a focus on materials. Researchers are from the departments of Chemistry, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Physics & Astronomy. We are also home to key materials-related facilities at UBC. These include the Surface and Interface Analysis Laboratory, a High Head Laboratory, a Nano/Microfabrication Facility, and the expandinbg Laboratory for Atomic Imaging.

Our researchers include the leaders of:

i) major industrial consortia (the Composites Research Network and the MagNet Research Network) who work on state-of-the-art industrial materials used in the aerospace and automotive industry.

ii) major international research partnerships (the Quantum Matter Institute’s association with the Max Planck Institutes in Germany) who focus on exotic new electronic and magnetic materials that could be important for future technologies based on quantum mechanics.

iii) major national training programs in the burgeoning field of Silicon Photonics.

I invite you to join us in exploring potential collaborative projects.
